Rescue Laxmi -- Sector-3 --

Hey Guys,

Just wanted to share a simple but a heart clinching story about Lakshmi...

Yesterday evening while classes were going on Rupesh called and asked me, Amit, Nigaar & Reena to meet him near Datta Medhe College as he wanted us to visit Sec 3 slums.....

Unfortunately, Amit, Nigaar and Reena couldn't accompany us to Sec 3 as they were getting late...I was totally dumbstruck to find out that Nigaar stays at Ambarnath,Amit stays near Sheelphata & Reena near Bhandup...U totally inspire the cause...Kudos guys!!!!!!..

Rupesh & I visited Sec 3 to meet the families...We met Reshma's family and were generally inquiring about Mukesh, Reshma, Lakshmi et all....

We spoke extensively with Reshma's mother and were shocked to know that Lakshmi's family stays in nearby slums and they've disowned Lakshmi and her newborn.(1 week old) ..Reason: She is an unmarried mother--- with her boyfriend without any trace now....

Reshma's mother is also skeptical about Lakshmi and her newborn, as her daughter is also seventeen and other people might say that Lakhsmi might influence Reshma in a bad way, hence she wants to give the child to someone else and marry Lakshmi off.....

That was very nice to know that Reshma's mother took care of Lakshmi and her newborn for more than 3 months just like her own daughter...We had a difficult time convincing her that we shall find an alternative for Lakshmi and her child...

Finally after much persuasion from Rupesh, she agreed to take care of Lakshmi and her newborn till the time we find an alternative for Lakshmi[ Approx 3- 4 mnths]...LEAD will also take care medical and day-to-day needs of Lakshmi and her newborn ....Here, I would like to urge all the girl volunteers to visit Sec 3 regularly as Reshma's mother and Lakshmi would find easy to talk to girls rather than guys....

Now...Our major task is to find an alternative for Lakshmi and her child....Lakshmi is also ready to part ways with her child....Personally, I don't think that will be a good option as she is a mother of that child....

I spoke with my mother [who is a part of Womens Welfare Committee ] about Lakshmi and she said that will speak with the NGO committee @ Matunga who will assist her to get a job at their center and it'll try their level best to find parents for adoption of her child....Will keep you posted on this !!!!!

Guys, Pls ideate and revert if you can think of any other alternative.....

  1. Great Kaustubh..!!!
So you have already started the rescue work....

Yes friends, as he says --- it is more important for our girl volunteers to be more serious now.... Please don't misunderstand me--- By this , I mean --

sitting with & talking to the elder girls, about their worries, problems- physical, emotional, family, SEXUAL, any affairs-- yes , I mean it!!! So that we can avoid any such problems in future with other girls in other slum-communities... (There are elder girls in all the 3 slums...)

Also talk to their mothers about their daughters, imp. of girl-child--- Do some research if you want & talk to them about the role of modern woman in shaping today's society....
Educate them--- Empower them--- Make them realise that they are not supposed to waste away their lives in the bondages of their drunkard husbands & laborious work----
Do some research on women--centric NGOs-- we can partner with them if things are fine---Arranging seminars, counselling sessions, just born babies, younger mothers (19-20 yrs)....

    Lots to talk--
But more important--- WALK THE TALK NOW !!!!

    Good luck...

    Rupesh
